There are many types of email scams out there, however the most prevalent may be the “419″, or “advance-fee”, fraud. This is a scam in which the target is convinced to transfer sums of money in hopes of significantly larger gain. This was originally popularized over 100 years ago as the “Spanish Prisoner” scam, in which the scammer tells the target that a wealthy prisoner needs funds to bribe guards for his escape, and will share untold treasures with them upon his escape. In the early 1980′s, this concept was used by Nigerian university students luring victims with the promise of oil riches. The ploy was usually done through mailed letters and fax machines, and soon spread from Nigeria across the world. The term “419″ refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code dealing with fraud.
Today, the increased use of email has drastically reduced the cost of scammers’ transmission, however, it has also increased awareness. It is crucial that websites such as GetPayback.com exist to inform and warn people of these scams. You may already have been a victim of what we’re referring to here. Get Payback is your chance to fight back. Unless we identify the individuals guilty of these email scams and acts of fraud, and increase public awareness, they will never end.
